WHERE DOES GRANITE COME FROM?
P L AT I NUM S E RV I C E S | 1 0
What is Granite? An inspiring natural stone that us always unique, granite guarantees uniqueness for all your countertop needs. Granite is an igneous rock, comprised of natural minerals, like quartz and feldspar, that give it that signature look. Utilization of this stone include many famous structures around the world, including the base of the Statue of Liberty or even Mount Rushmore. Where does it come from? Quarries are used to uncover and gather building stone. Location of these quarries can be found throughout the world, some examples are Italy, Brazil, India, as well as many USA locations. Upon acquisition of the stone, it is then removed,
cut into slabs, polished, then ultimately fabricated into countertops. The utmost care goes into assure the stone maintains its beauty. Extraction of granite is meticulous to ensure the stone splits along the grain to produce large blocks of granite. Blocks of stone are then removed to be cut into slabs to fabricate individual pieces. Is granite right for you? Ranking an 8 out of 10 on the Mohs scale, granite is a durable stone that proves to impress every time. Due to its dense nature, it has a lesser chance to scratch and stain, though this doesn’t make it stain resistant.Granite is typically finished with a sealant that aids in the resistance to scratches, stains and heat. Granite can withstand temperatures of hot pots and pans, using hot pads are a good idea to reduce worry, but the stone is capable of enduring high temperatures
without trepidation of damages. If you’re looking for exclusivity in your look, this is the choice for you. Since this is a nat urally derived stone, it varies in appearance in each slab. It is important that you go to a “slab yard” to see your options before moving forward with installation. Extra options Finishes to your stone can further individualize your look. Polished finish, providing the most traditional look, allows the surface to speak for itself. The granite is polished to give it that show stopping shine. This stylistic choice proves to be the most beneficial due to maintenance care being less involved. Honed granite is when the buffing aspect of the polishing process is omitted, which creates a low gloss look. This differs to polished granite due to the lack of reflectivity. Lastly, leathered granite is a finish option that allows the natural contours and colors to shine through. Leaving your stone subtly matte, this finish provides a fabulous look. By running over the surface of the stone with a diamond tipped brush, the granite rids any imperfections it may have. The homeowner is allowed full accessibility to personalize their stone by finalizing their granite with how rough or smooth is preferred. Along with the personalization of the finish of the stone, you are also able to select the edge of the stone. There are various edges ranging from beveled to bullnose. These last few tweaks allow for distinctiveness of your own home style.

WHERE DOES QUARTZ COME FROM?
P L AT I NUM S E RV I C E S | 1 2
What is Quartz? Quartz is a mineral composed of silicon and oxygen. It is one of nature’s hardest materials, rating 7 out of 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Mined quartz crystals are combined with high-quality polyester resins and pigments producing a beautiful stone surface that is built to last a lifetime. How is Quartz made? Quartz is a man-made, engineered surface. The slabs contain approximately 93% quartz and 7% resins, polymers, and
pigments. The raw materials are mixed and placed into a large mold to create unique patterns. By compression, a quartz slab is formed. From there, the slab is then dried, heated, and final touches are made to ensure the slab is a perfect choice for your home. Is Quartz the right countertop for me? Engineered quartz allows for endless design possibilities. There are limitless combinations of particulate pairings within a quartz countertop. Since this product is man-made, quartz slabs can be created to mimic the look of marble, quartzite, soapstone, concrete, and limestone.
Quartz is an incredibly consistent product. Most quartz countertops are more uniform than granite. Variation in quartz, color, shape, shade, pattern, and size are unique traits of quartz countertops. Utilizing quartz as backsplash is a great option to create a seamless and clean kitchen aesthetic. A great way to spice up a plain kitchen is to utilize different quartz colors for the kitchen island and surrounding countertop space. Features and Benefits • A non-porous surface locks out liquids, mold and mildew and does not harbor bacteria or allow it to penetrate the surface. It is hygienic and perfect for even the busiest of kitchens • Easy to maintain and clean • Lustrous surface that does not require sealing, conditioning, or polishing
• Scratch, heat, and stain resistant • 30-year transferable warranty
INSPIRED BY NATURE Quartz is a naturally occuring resource that is abundantly available. Mined quartz crystals are combined with high-quality polyester resins and pigments producing a beautiful stone surface that is built to last a lifetime.

TOWNHOME OVERHAUL
Lowe’s Virtual Kitchen Designer, Kaitlyn Pulkett, walked us through the most complex kitchen she has designed to date. She shares her incredible rendering of the space with us. Her client had purchased two town homes next door to each other and had plans to knock down the wall that separated the kitchens. This created a new, massive kitchen space. Pulkett helped her client choose Diamond Reflections cabinets in the door style Clarke. She juxtaposed the colors “White” and “Buckskin” to add an extra layer of intrigue. The warmth from these cabinets was paired exquisitely with allen + roth™ quartz countertops in the color Alluring. The marriage of sleek countertops and traditional cabinet colors creates kitchen design that will stand the test of time. They carried the clean white allen + roth quartz throughout the kitchen. Utilizing the quartz in applications other than the countertops was a great way to tie the whole kitchen together. The delicately veined white countertops pair perfectly with geometric backsplash. The peninsula has a waterfall end, but we did island matching back panel and legs under neath the waterfall. Pulkett said of the bar area shown to the left of the island. The trendy yet sophisticated waterfall edge creates the perfect amount of elegance in the kitchen. The next step was to tackle the enormous space to be used for an island.

Waterfall Island
“The customer wanted a large kitchen island in a U shape, large enough to form a banquette that would fit a full-sized table to seat 6…” Pulkett said of the center island. This multi-purpose island serves as both a food preparation and gathering space. Finding clever ways to utilize spaces in unique ways was imperative for this kitchen renovation. This large space needed an anchor, and this incredibe island serves as the perfect focal point. This impressive kitchen boasts a 48” gas range, and 60” fridge and freezer. Two dishwashers with matching cabinet panels framed in the main sink. The cabinet panels elevate the entire space. A double oven/ microwave combo unit finished up the kitchen appliances. “The biggest challenge here, aside from sheer size of the kitchen, was that they wanted the look of inset cabinet doors, without actually having inset doors.I put end panels on the end of the cabinets that were ¾” deeper than the cabinet itself so that the front of the panel would be even with the fronts of the doors. This gave them and inset look without actually doing fully inset doors. The decorative legs helped achieve this effect on the island.” Pulkett said. Pulkett created a seamless and gorgeous design in a space that could have easily looked very disjointed. This complete and total kitchen transformation leaves us starstruck. This kitchen will be the perfect space for Pulkett’s clients to entertain in for decades to come.

SEATTLE TRANSFORMATION
Jaw-Dropping Renovation
REEVE’S FAMILY An incredible transformationof anentire downstairs living area. An updated blue kitchen, gorgeous porcelain fireplace and unique Derivati shower. From drab to fab. This transfor- mation is jaw-dropping.
A HIDDEN GEM
It is hard to believe that these photos are of the same home. This before and after renovation is truly remark- able. A full kitchen, living room and bathroom gut. The Reeves’ family was so excited to move into their forever home. A great location, close to fami- ly and in a sought after neighborhood. The only problem was that the inte- rior of the home was less than ideal. A dated kitchen and bathroom were begging for a complete overhaul. Af- ter careful consideration, the Reeves’ decided to completely transform their new home. They bagan the design pro cess at Lowe’s where they chose from the extensive and gorgeous Deri- vati and alen + roth countertop lines.
Their first project to tackle was the kitchen. Goodbye to the blue vinyl floors and dated appliances. They freshened up the space with grey brick backsplash, blue cabinets and crisp white quartz countertops. They added a trend-forward wa- terfall island to elevate the space. With two young chilren, and a busy fast-paced lifestyle, the Reeves’ are con stantly in the kitchen. This space is the perfect blend of functionality and beau ty. A Traditions™ wood coun- tertop is the perfect way to add extra texture in the space. It pairs effort- lessly with the new chestnut wood- en flooring and open wood shelving for decorative yet functional storage.
A skylight was the perfect touch to add to their Seattle home. This helps the space capitalize on the sunny Wash ington summer days, since Se- attle is typically drizzly. They were so happy to be able to finally com- plete this proj ect and enjoy their new home in time for summer. They now have the perfect space to entertain friends and family for years to come.

An especially great addition to this kitchen was the Traditions wood butcher block counter top. The subtle, yet striking wood top adds a layer of tex ture to the space and breaks up the sea of grey and blue. The brick accent wall created an accent wall that centered entire design.A peaceful am biance is promoted through the use of muted colors and in- credible lighting from the skylight.
